Welcome to Nature and Spirit

This Forum was thought for believers and non-believers who would like to discuss about the implications and reality of 'spirit' as applied to the nature of man and share their experience on the subject.

Spirit in English comes from the Latin spiritus via the old French espirit, meaning breath, translating the Greek word pneuma. As that it is an allegory for exhalation (pronounced word). Therefore it is a perfect analogy for the source of meaning in our communication (the naming). In mystic circles it was long associated with the mind of man. In that context spirituality would come to mean that which is associated with the mind's activity as opposed to what can be associated with the biological body's activity.

Anima in English comes via the old Latin, from Etruscan anem, meaning 'that who breathes'. The Vulgate creates a wrong association with the Greek word psykhe (psyche) based in the erroneous interpretation that breathing is a consequence of an intellectual action, and a Roman misunderstanding of what the Greek word conveys. As that it is an allegory for the non-conscientious activity which is the ruler of our biological life. For mystic circles it was associated with the body of man, association which can be seen in the word's meaning (in romance languages) as the ghost of the deceased.

And finally Soul in English comes from the ancient Germanic sĂȘla, meaning 'that which is life'. In Latin this meaning is given in the word 'alma' which is associated to 'nourishing'. In every case it is associated with the 'living being' as its 'principle'. There is no known word in Greek associated with its meaning and the closest should be found in psykhe. In Mystic circles alma or soul is the original self of man.
